A dark but comforting fragrance, Épine Mortelle has a spicy darkness of a black-green forest, peeking out from behind the absolute essence of pink roses. The extrait de parfum from the Black Label collection opens on the skin with a spicy mix of peppers — black, pink, and a dash of Sichuan chili pepper — infused with nutmeg and the spicy, pine-y aroma of green angelica. Despite the inclusion of so many different forms of pepper, the fragrance isn’t overwhelming. The bouquet is then enriched with Damascan rose and rose de mai. The purely floral scent quickly takes on a fruity quality. A balanced, more subtle fruitiness merely enriches the roses and turns their pale pink colour into something more rubied and velvety. The perfume uses a hefty dose of powdery mimosa pollen with such wonderful richness that it pops out right away, smelling sweet and bright. A delicate vanilla provides an added dose of sweetness and the perfect base for this seemingly floral, yet forest-y green scent.
